Rundown of the notable movepool additions Mk II

I've done this before with Platinum, and no doubt HGSS will bring its fair share of tutors and level-up additions. Will we go to the Twilight Zone once more, with a previously overlooked Pokémon catapulting itself to the top of the charts?

Anyway, you know the drill now: I will only add moves that are relevant to the Pokémon, so no moves that are obsoleted by another one (for example, Heat Wave on all these Fire-types in Platinum), no attacking moves on Pokémon that clearly specialize in the opposing category (example from Platinum: Heat Wave wasn't listed for Staraptor), no ultra-weak attack moves (another Platinum example: TWISTER), and no NFEs except for the competitively relevant ones.

When a Pokémon is in blue, it means it hasn't been fully checked, when it's red, it means it's confirmed to get nothing new, and when it's black, it has been fully checked and all its moves are listed.

I'm looking forward to your coverage. I don't really use any other sources nowadays because you're so reliable for Pokemon news.

I'm actually vehemently opposed to the method of including "relevant only" because it's the surest way that misinformation is spread. Especially when a move is "obsoleted." I see no reason to ignore Hydro Pump just because there's Surf. It's that kind of thinking that made the idea of move tutoring in this game sound absurd, because so many people couldn't get over the fact that only three-four competitively viable moves existed in some form that was lost between games.

If they brought back a tutor for Horn Drill for example, you'd ignore it because it's a OHKO and either sparsely used or illegal, and that's bull. I get that it's called the "spoils" but then you'd otherwise be dealing with an extremely short list if you're only going with what works in the metagame.

But then you're not going to be the only person on the internet compiling things, so I suppose it won't matter. Also the people that violated this even worse were ignoring the outclassed pokes and otherwise NUs, but at least you have a full list.

Fair enough, but I applied the exact same rules with Platinum and ended up with a rather hefty list. And how much of it actually works? A lot of the stuff I listed Trick and Knock Off for never, ever uses them. Besides, if I were as harsh as you make it sound, Dialga would have nothing listed right now. It's not like Metal Burst is going to be of much interest, but it's still a huge notch above Palkia's Hydro Pump.

Overall, this is meant as an abridged version of the list Smogon will definitely make. Nothing more.

I don't see the logic behind that, at all, but I don't want to argue about it.

Blame Smogon and their initial huge mess of the platinum tutors for the main source of my issues with this method.

You know what? Maybe in Hydro Pump's particular case you're right, and I'm being too harsh on it. It's not like it's Heat Wave redux, where the difference between it and Flamethrower isn't enough to make Heat Wave anything but the inferior move.

But if there's a tutor for, say, Headbutt (and odds are there will be one), it's not appearing anywhere (edit: except maybe for Jirachi). Guaranteed. But I do tend to keep all non-offensive moves on the list, because their usefulness is just so much harder to gauge than the offensive ones.

I could go for some Extremespeed and Tri Attack, since Togekiss can't get Nasty Plot alongside the only current legit means of having Tri Attack on it. While TT Kiss will never be its most useful set it is a fucking BITCH to fight and it's deliciously evil and fun to use. If I had a nickel for the number of times a counter or status absorber switched in only to be frozen..

I'd also appreciate Dynamicpunch, again because Emerald compatibility isn't friendly with egg moves and it's an awesome move on Gravity teams. Zap Cannon doesn't do as much, but eh, I kinda expect it to be tutorable.

I kind of hope Horn Drill and Fissure don't make it, only because Gamblers and their equivalents are bad enough as it is without getting stuff like Tauros and Dragonite added to their selection.

I'm thinking Mega Punch, Mega Kick, Softboiled, Sky Attack and Seismic Toss will make it back. Even if a bunch were in Emerald, they almost have to.

Slowflake, you did mention in one of your vids the problem with Pal Park and the DSi, and after explaining that to a friend of mine, he strongly suspects that they're going to make "everything" accessible through 4th gen to avert the potential problem this would cause. I have to agree, which is why I think a lot of those Emerald tutorable moves will be returning.

That's a good point, though the more casual players care more about Pokémon accessibility than moves.

And I think we'd all be interested in a Curse tutor, just to see what would happen. And since Zap Cannon now has 120 power, it'd be fun to use on Gravity teams as well.

Zap Cannon doesn't really hold weight over Thunder on Gravity teams because it's still somewhat lacking in accuracy. Dynamicpunch on the other hand is favorable because good fighting moves are really inaccessible to most pokes that aren't of that type. Barring the rare Superpower, there's really nothing else that warrants use. ..until Gravity kicks in.

I dunno, Zap Cannon has 83 accuracy under Gravity, and it paralyzes every single time it hits, while Thunder only paralyzes 30% of the time... I'd take Zap Cannon TBH.

And just for fun, looking at the stuff that could learn Zap Cannon but not Thunderbolt or Thunder in GSC... we got Alakazam, Slowbro, Slowking, Hypno, Flareon (!!!), Togekiss, Espeon, Umbreon and Ursaring, with possibly more from the other two generations (presumably Leafeon and Glaceon among others). Oh yeah, and there was an event Squirtle with it too.

83 accuracy is still asking to be bent over and raped when you miss, which is one of the things you're trying to avert when you use Gravity. Reliability has always come before side effect. If there were a 100 base power rock move with 90 accuracy no one would use Stone Edge if they could learn that.

Dynamicpunch gets a pass for the reasons I already listed. Fighting is a better offensive type than Electric and it's not like most pokes that want a fighting move have access to something better unless they're Fighting type.

I've updated this with the level-up additions. I debated long and hard on whether I should add the dragon trio's Power Gem/Destiny Bond, as well as Kyogre's Aqua Ring, then decided that I'd add them in a "they're there if you want them" sort of way. Which is more than can be said for the moves I left out back in Platinum. I wasn't so kind for Muddy Water, Lava Plume (another instance where it inexplicably got favored over Flare Blitz) and especially Hyper Voice, though.

Edit: I'm going to go to work on the egg moves now. Damn.

Edit 2: Done.

I wouldn't have put Muddy Water or Hyper Voice up there, either (nor Dragon Rush or Power Gem, but after giving you shit for wanting to exclude irrelevant moves I gotta say I appreciate it.)

That motley assortment of priority you posted was "unconfirmed" but even so, it's not so damning. I don't think they'll be too liberal in handing them out, and besides, for weak priority moves to be really evil you need Swords Dance or Technician. Otherwise STAB or weaknesses are all you can do, which only go so far. Bullet Punch is a very meh type and yet vicious because of all the bonuses Scizor has going for it.
