Analysis: Gyarados

[DEFENSIVE COMBINATIONS]

Gyarados's Water / Flying give it weakness to Electric and Rock, resist to Bug, Fighting, Fire, Steel, Water, and Immunity to Ground. Steel pokemon like Metagross, Jirachi, Bronzong, and others all resist Rock, but only Magnezone completely, since it covers all of Gyarados's weaknesses, and Gyarados covers Magnezone's weaknesses, so they were made for each other. Most physical Rock attacks come from Tyranitar, and special Electric attacks usually come from Gengar, Cresselia, HP Electric users, such as Vaporeon and Slowbro, and Grass pokemon that Gyarados can resist thanks to flying, but can still take him down, such as Celebi and Tangrowth.

Viable options to pair up Gyarados with Gliscor, who resists Rock and is Immune to Electric. Gliscor could help it out alot, counters one of Gyarados big problems, Heracross, who has the move Stone Edge which can be deadly. Lanturn can also be a good partner, as Lanturn is weak to Ground, having Gyarados resist it, and Lanturn Volt Abosorbing Electric attacks, taking neutral from Rock. As said before, Magnezone is the best combination with Gyarados, it's a perfect Defensive Combination.

- Stone Edge
- Waterfall
- Earthquake

[/SET]

[SET DESCRIPTION]

Standard DD Gyarados. The standard Gyarados since the ADV days, having Ground, Water, and Ice in it's moveset, which not many pokemon can actually resist all 3 attacks. With the new attack Stone Edge, it's actually a slot to consider, which counter's pokemon that were counters, like Zapdos. Stone Edge also takes out opposing Gyarados, but the lack of Accuracy can be a problem if you don't like missing, which nobody does. 246 allows you to outspeed pokemon like Tyranitar, and after 1 Dragon Dance, you will be outspeeding pokemon like Starmie and Non-Scarf Garchomps.

Gyarados has the potential to come in to pokemon such as Garchomp, Heracross (be careful for Stone Edge though) and Lucario thanks to Intimidate, which cut's the Attack by 2. Coming into one of these pokemon can actually let you set up a Dragon Dance, but don't be too confident, as Heracross can still hurt after an Intimidate, CB Hera of course. Gyarados is better off not having Stealth Rock on the field, which takes 25% of it's health on switch ins.

[/SET DESCRIPTION]

[OTHER OPTIONS]

Gyarados has some other few options it could use over Earthquake or Stone Edge. Ice Fang could be a good move,it can attack pokemon like Celebi, and possibly 2HKO it. Bite could be a useful slot, attacking pokemon like Gengar, Starmie, and Celebi, which are some common switch ins. Return is a Interesting slot, which it can be good if used right, mainly to hit pokemon who resist the Ground / Water combo.

[/OTHER OPTIONS]

[OFFENSIVE COMBINATIONS]

Gyarados works with pokemon who can beat Tangrowth, Celebi, Slowbro, Starmie, and Milotic. Infernape can take out Tangrowth and Celebi, but has problems with Slowbro, Starmie, and Milotic. Gengar could possibly work too, but it's not really a sure counter to the Bulky Water pokemon, dispite it having Thunderbolt. Nasty Plot Azelf could help, Nasty Plot Grass Knot's aren't too pretty on Bulky Waters, and Shadow Ball / Flamethrower take out Celebi and Tangrowth. Megnezone can pretty much do the same job as being Defensive, Thunderbolt / HP Ice takes out all of the pokemon mentioned above. Heracross can also work perfectly, eliminating Skarmory and Cresselia, pokemon who prevent it from sweeping.

Ability: Intimidate
Stats: 394 HP/ 320 Atk / 228 Def / 140 SpAtk / 236 SpDef / 223 Speed
Moves:
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Stone Edge
- Taunt
[/SET]

[SET DESCRIPTION]

This Gyarados is designed to take hits. Garchomp won't be able to do much if played to Gyarados if played correctly. Being bulkY, it makes a very good lead, with Intimidate, it can scare off Tyranitars and Salamences, 2 of the most common leads. With Taunt, you are able to stop pokemon like Dusknoir to spread Will-O-Wisp, switch-ins for the most part. It can also stop other pokemon from setting up, such as another Gyarados, and orevent you from being hazed by Skarmory, letting you set up. Waterfall is there for STAB, and hurting alot of things better, and Stone Edge for those smart Salamence/Gyarados who want to switch into you.

[/SET DESCRIPTION]

[OTHER OPTIONS]

You could always try Eartquake if you fear Magnezone or Tentacruel. Bite could be a good option also, hitting some of the most common pokemon that switch in to Gyarados, such as Gengar, Starmie, and Cresselia. You can also use Return if you are afraid of Bulky Waters.

[/OTHER OPTIONS]

[OFFENSIVE COMBINATIONS]

This section doesn’t differ too much from the one mentioned above.

[/OFFENSIVE COMBINATIONS]

[STRATEGIC COMBINATIONS]

Rapid Spin, like mentioned before, this pokemon takes 25% each time it's hit, taking a big chunk each time it happens. Wish would be good too, to keep him living longer, and heal him up, which is worth it to prevent pokemon like Garchomp trying to sweep you.

[/STRATEGIC COMBINATIONS]

[SET COUNTERS]

Starmie makes a fine counter if not carrying Bite, killing it with a Thunderbolt. Bulky Waters like Milotic, who sometimes carry Hidden Power Electric can be problems, and so can Suicune. Basiclly Bulky Waters that resist Water attacks.

Name: ChoiceBand Gyarados
Item: Choice Band
EVs: 4 Hp / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Intimidate
Stats: 332 HP / 383 Atk / 194 Def / 140 SpAtk  / 236 SpDef  / 261 Speed
Moves:
- Waterfall
- Earthquake / Bite
- Stone Edge
- Ice Fang
[/SET]

[SET DESCRIPTION]

Choice Band Gyarados is a beast. CB Gyarados is made for those people who wan to sweep faster and don't want to waste time setting up. Stone Edge is for other Gyarados and Salamence who want to switch into you, and get a CB Stone Edge in the face. Ice Fang hits Celebi and grass counters harder, such as Tangrowth. Waterfall is for the STAB, and with CB, it will be hurting many, many things. Earthquake for those Magnezone and Tentacruel who want to be cool and switch in to Gyarados, Earthquake OHKO's then both.

[/SET DESCRIPTION]

[OTHER OPTIONS]

Bite could be a option over Earthquake if you think you don't need Earthquake, with Bite providing you with Gengar/Starmie coverage better. Return could hit those Bulky Waters harder than any attack on the set, hitting Vaporeon and Swampert harder than Waterfall or Ice Fang would.

[/OTHER OPTIONS]

[OFFENSIVE COMBINATIONS]

Gyarados had problems with Skarmory, and Cresselia too, due to Charge Beam. Gyarados beats Gliscor, so Heracross could be an ideal pokemon to help it out with Cresselia, having Megahorn, and Close Combat, for Skarmory. Vaporeon can also cause problems, as it has Water Absorb, making it's only STAB move useless, and it's other moves don't do much it, as Vaporeon is 3HKOed by Earthquake. Heracross can deal with Vaporeon, and most Bulky Waters, such as Suicune and Milotic.
Gyarados does have problems with Weezing, and so does Heracross. Heatran is a good choice, Weezing only uses special attacks, and the first thing they do when they see a physical pokemon is WoW, giving Heatran a attack boost.

[/OFFENSIVE COMBINATIONS]

[STRATEGIC COMBINATIONS]

Rapid Spin is very much needed so Gyarados can sweep more. Without it, it takes 25% from Stealth Rocks, limiting only to 4 switch ins without Rapid Spin. Wish can be used if you want it to live longer, it's always a good option.

[/STRATEGIC COMBINATIONS]

[SET COUNTERS]

Vaporeon can resist all of the moves. Waterfall being it's only STAB Move is absorbed  by Vaporeon, and healed. Other Bulky Waters and Water Abosorbers, such as Suicune, Swampert, Quagsire wall Gyarados, Cresselia and Skarmory too.
