Devising my own augment distribution

0
So I was planning on following GauRocks' guide, but then after reading about the potency of Limit Break I decided to give it to Cecil and Kain rather than Cecil and Rydia. Now normally this means I'd give ???'s Love to Rydia, but my brother is still undecided on whether he'll get the game or not, and since there are ways to max out Rydia's stats without Limit Break or ???'s Love I decided to give the latter to Cecil, just in case I ever get someone to power it up. (Because let's face it, a whack of the Stardust Rod isn't exactly going to do significant damage to a moderately threatening enemy, ???'s Love or not.)

So with that in mind, I've taken GauRocks' guide and made just enough modifications to still max everyone out while leaving Rydia with no "uber" augment. Well, that's a lie - he gave Rydia some physical-based augments, and while Kain will be in the air quite often, I still think they'd serve him better, so I gave them to him instead. Here's a diagram of what I've changed from the guide:

Which would give this augment distribution:

As expected, Cecil is a joke to max out, and as you can see, Rosa and Edge remained completely unchanged, and so would've Kain had Rydia not needed the third Whirlwind. So I had to find a way to max Kain out without it, which leads to the one thing I'm not very happy about. Namely, giving him Omnicasting. He has no use whatsoever for it outside of maxing stats. Not that it's that useful to Cecil either (especially since it takes a valuable spot that's better spent on physical stuff), but Esuna and Raise across the board > absolutely nothing.

So, are there any mistakes or flaws with this setup? Any improvements to suggest? I wanted to validate this before actually going through with it, especially since I'm sitting on top of an all-important Tsunami augment right now, and I want to be absolutely sure this is going to work before making a move.

If you give Twincast to Rosa you're able to use Ultima with Cecil, which along with Adrenaline and Limit Break on Cecil will allow you to hit Proto Babil between 70k and 90k a pop. It's a highly reliable way to beat it.

However that means switching stuff around so your other characters can make themselves useful. Brace and Draw Attacks should be on one character so they'll take the laser beams and 9th Dimensions that could otherwise annihilate Cecil. Only one person between Cecil and Rosa needs Adrenaline and Limit Break to make the most of Ultima.

Also, it should be mentioned that Edge with Hide, Adrenaline and Limit Break will allow him to throw items for big damage and stay off the battlefield, which is useful but not nearly so as the lovers using Twincast.

The idea is, you put up the reraise spell or whatever it's called and once Proto kills off the party, it's taken enough abuse that you'll be able to put it to rest before it can recover bountiful HP. If you've got brass balls you can take on that superboss while you've got Fusoya. Have him Cry and then do basic utility work.

So are you suggesting I should give my other two Braces to Kain and Edge instead of Rosa and Rydia? I thought about it, honestly, and I can sort of see the point since they go well with Draw Attacks. Unless you mean I only need one character with Draw Attacks + Brace? Then Cecil's the obvious choice, and who gets the other Braces doesn't matter much.

Aside from that, I've already put everything you said where they belong, except for Limit Break on Edge of course.

And I assume the reraise spell is Phoenix?

Yeah, if there isn't a single target equivalent of Life 3. I honestly should be better with the spell names after 10 months of not playing, seeing as I've beaten FF4 who knows how many times. Otherwise if there's a single target Reraise type spell, have Fusoya use it with Omnicasting so the whole party can reap the benefits.

Actually Rydia with Brace and Draw Attacks works just as well, but I should point out I had an Adamant Armor on her, which is needed to block 9th Dimension. The laser beams will hit her for only about 3k after Brace, so while she maintains that someone else can heal her. Rosa will be tied up using Ultima.

No limit break on Edge is inconsequential; it was just a passing mention.

Without Fusoya, Kain using Cry also works, and his Darkness jumps with Limit Break can allow you to forego that Edge getup.

If you're ridiculously lucky as I was during one fight, Proto will spam the damageless 9th Dimension until his secondary script takes over, leaving you several turns to just relentlessly carve off hundreds of thousands of HP.

Oh, and don't forget Fast Talker on Rosa and Cecil (which you already have, but I meant equip them for that fight.)

Nah, Phoenix is the only auto-rise-from-the-dead here.

So I'm supposedly all set for Proto-Babil with this setup... I take it I'll do fine overall? No mistakes in the stat boost charts or anything? I already checked, and there should be none, but just to be sure...

Yeah, you'll be fine. Just remember that the fight involves some luck and more often than not, Proto is not a pushover. The first challenge is simply getting Brace up before he can kill a crucial party member in one way or another. Enter the fight with your Adrenaline user in yellow.

With Brace up before Cecil or Rosa can bite it, it's smooth sailing until he eventually uses his grand all-party attack.

Thanks, I'll keep all that in mind.

BTW, is there a list of enemies affected by Osmose somewhere? It's not the uber spell it is in FF6, and maybe that's for the best, but I'd still like to know where to use it so I don't end up wasting 5 MP. Especially when it comes to Tellah. DAMN that 90 MP limit is tight.

I'm really not sure, but I had always assumed that if the monster wasn't undead, it was safe to use. My memory of that is pretty poor. If Tellah is using it and getting bad results, it might just be because his Int is that bad.

Yeah, but bad Int means he'll get little MP, not zero at every turn.
