A Pokémon’s Nature is the “characteristic” or “personality” of the Pokémon. There are 25 different natures, and a Pokémon will be given a nature when it is born or encountered. The nature of a Pokémon affects a Pokémon’s stats and its preferred Poffin flavors.

How Natures Affect Stats
The Nature of a Pokémon increases one of the Pokémon’s main stats, with the exception of HP (Atk, Def, SpAtk, SpDef, Speed,) and decreases one of these main stats. Five natures, Hardy, Docile, Serious, Bashful, and Quirky, increase a certain stat and decrease the same stat - these are called neutral natures, as they have no visible stat increases or decreases. The boost that a nature gives to a stat is 10% plus or minus the original stat (1.1 * original stat for stats increased by the nature, 0.9 * original stat for stats decreased by the nature.) The nature boost is incorporated into the stat formula as such:
Stat = floor((floor((Base * 2 + IV + floor(EV / 4)) * Level / 100) + Num) * Nature)
“Nature” is equal to 1.1 if the nature is beneficial to the stat, 0.9 if the nature is harmful to the stat, or 1 if the nature does not affect that stat, or if it is a neutral nature. The list of natures, as well as the corresponding stats increased and decreased is as follows:

| Nature | Stat Increased | Stat Decreased | | Hardy | Attack | Attack | | Lonely | Attack | Defense | | Brave | Attack | Speed | | Adamant | Attack | Special Attack | | Naughty | Attack | Special Defense | | Bold | Defense | Attack | | Docile | Defense | Defense | | Relaxed | Defense | Speed | | Impish | Defense | Special Attack | | Lax | Defense | Special Defense | | Timid | Speed | Attack | | Hasty | Speed | Defense | | Serious | Speed | Speed | | Jolly | Speed | Special Attack | | Naïve | Speed | Special Defense | | Modest | Special Attack | Attack | | Mild | Special Attack | Defense | | Quiet | Special Attack | Speed | | Bashful | Special Attack | Special Attack | | Rash | Special Attack | Special Defense | | Calm | Special Defense | Attack | | Gentle | Special Defense | Defense | | Sassy | Special Defense | Speed | | Careful | Special Defense | Special Attack | | Quirky | Special Defense | Special Defense |

How Natures Affect Poffin Flavors
The Nature of a Pokémon also affects the flavor of Poffins that the Pokémon likes and dislikes in the following way (if a Pokémon has a neutral nature, it has no liked or disliked flavors):
| Nature | Favorite Flavor | Disliked Flavor | | Hardy | Spicy | Spicy | | Lonely | Spicy | Sour | | Brave | Spicy | Sweet | | Adamant | Spicy | Dry | | Naughty | Spicy | Bitter | | Bold | Sour | Spicy | | Docile | Sour | Sour | | Relaxed | Sour | Sweet | | Impish | Sour | Dry | | Lax | Sour | Bitter | | Timid | Sweet | Spicy | | Hasty | Sweet | Sour | | Serious | Sweet | Sweet | | Jolly | Sweet | Dry | | Naïve | Sweet | Bitter | | Modest | Dry | Spicy | | Mild | Dry | Sour | | Quiet | Dry | Sweet | | Bashful | Dry | Dry | | Rash | Dry | Bitter | | Calm | Bitter | Spicy | | Gentle | Bitter | Sour | | Sassy | Bitter | Sweet | | Careful | Bitter | Dry | | Quirky | Bitter | Bitter |

How Natures are Generated
When a Pokémon is encountered in the wild, or when an egg for a Pokémon is created, its Personality Value (PV), an integer from 0 to 4,294,967,295, inclusive, is created. The nature of the Pokémon is then determined through the function PV mod 25, where "mod" or "modulus" is a mathematical operation that returns the remainder of the first parameter divided by the second parameter. The result of this function is the nature value, which then becomes a nature in the following way:
| Nature Value | Nature | | 0 | Hardy | | 1 | Lonely | | 2 | Brave | | 3 | Adamant | | 4 | Naughty | | 5 | Bold | | 6 | Docile | | 7 | Relaxed | | 8 | Impish | | 9 | Lax | | 10 | Timid | | 11 | Hasty | | 12 | Serious | | 13 | Jolly | | 14 | Naïve | | 15 | Modest | | 16 | Mild | | 17 | Quiet | | 18 | Bashful | | 19 | Rash | | 20 | Calm | | 21 | Gentle | | 22 | Sassy | | 23 | Careful | | 24 | Quirky |
The PV of a Pokémon also indirectly determines the IVs of the Pokémon. So, the nature affects the IV possibilities in Pokémon that cannot breed. Pokémon that can breed can attain perfect IVs with any nature as a result of how IVs are transferred through breeding. In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, only four natures are possible for non-breedable Pokémon with perfect IVs: Timid, Modest, Calm, and Docile.
The Everstone Trick
When a Pokémon is bred, its PV will normally be generated in the same way as a wild Pokémon, and so it has a uniform chance of having each nature. However, if the female Pokémon or the Ditto holds the item Everstone while breeding, the egg Pokémon has a 50% chance of having the nature of the Pokémon holding the Everstone. Note that the 50% chance is the theoretical probability of hatching a Pokémon of the same nature; it is quite possible to hatch many eggs without getting a single one of the desired nature. Everstones can be found in the Underground.
The Synchronize Trick
Pokémon that cannot be bred cannot utilize the Everstone Trick in order to have a higher chance of obtaining the desired nature. However, if a Pokémon with the ability Synchronize is used in the first slot of a team when encountering a wild Pokémon, there is a 50% chance that this Pokémon will have the nature of the Synchronize Pokémon. Note again that it is quite possible to encounter many wild Pokémon without obtaining one of the desired nature. The Pokémon that can have the ability Synchronize are Mew, Espeon, Umbreon, Abra, Kadabra, Alakazam, Ralts, Kirlia, Gardevoir, Natu, and Xatu.
